Yeah man Jeff Beck doesnt even use a pick at all anymore - who is anyone to say Jeff Beck is "wrong!" The man who changed the world of guitar in the 1970's - so many guitarists were influenced heavily by Beck - even Eric Johnson, Steve Morse and Scott Henderson attribute Beck as being their no#1 inspiration. He just plays with his fingers now - no pick ever.

It always amazes me that Pro Tools always gets ranked no#1 - I have to fight with it whenever I use it.

What do you guys all say about strat replacement pickups? I like the idea of a bridge pickup thats a slim style humbucker and since I got to personally interview Seymour at NAMM, I am slanted towards Duncans - but there's all these NEW NEW guys - Fralin, Nordstrand, Lollar and the old school guys DiMarzio and EMG (well EMG is not really old school but they have been around for decades!) My stock strat pickups are - ... OK...... a litte thin and wanky (hollowish) if you ask me - they tend to piss me off a lot - anyone care to share their ideas?

I'd like to see that article because Mac probably discussed a wide variety of picking styles in their conversation and Schon probably mis interpereted what he said. Watch the videos for yourself they are only a small little glimpse of what I experienced with him personally.

No no No NO NOOO NO! McLaughlin does NOT hold the pick backwards! If you only knew that I spent 20 years hard core time studying and studying McLaughlin and everything about his technique. He is the main reason I developed my ideas on technique. When I finally got to meet him in person and eventually many more times hang out with him in person and DISCUSS picking technique - this is where HE TOLD ME about the SAROD technique - to which HE PERSONALLY SHOWED ME HOW TO DO.

Here's McLaughlin on Acoustic. Its funny to see how in many places the picking style looks like Brian's. WOW! SAROD rules!

I learned SAROD picking from John Mclaughlin - Although SAROD has been around fro 4,000 years, he is the original source for the Electric Guitar. Anyone who is interested in SAROD must study McLaughlin.

Modal tunes have one chord that lasts for a long time and stays. Songs can be anything and have any key modulation they want. This is not necessarily a modal tune but more in the category of a pop song.

I have many of them - still working on my review - back at ya later on that. However I do like KBA and Teoria and Auralia 4. I know LAfred and MibAC are supposed to be excellent. We'll see how they do.

2 different keys going on repeated. Simple. E major and C major - play major scales - E for 1 bar then C for 3 bars.

Here's a question from Rob Murtha:

    ------------------------------------------------------
Hi Pebber, I need your advice. I have been using several guitars for practicing and I'm noticing something. I started out trying using heavy strings with a fairly high action on a couple of strats and it was great for building up my chops but I started to really get fatigued. I pulled out my jazz box which has an amazing action and is very fast and I noticed that my left hand was getting ahead of my right hand for the first time so the excersizes are paying off. I decided to practice on the jazz box for a couple of days and when I went back to the strat it still felt good but I'm my timing is getting screwed up on the faster stuff. I also have a better strat with a lower action but I like the jazz box because its 24 3/4 scale. Do you think it's of any value to practice with heavy strings on a high action? Should I focus on the best axe and setup until I get this timing down?

    Thanks,
    Rob
    ----------------------------------------
Heavy strings and high action used to be the way that people got a better and fatter tone. I have 0.13's on most of my acoustics and practice on those when I need to build up my strength - but the big HOWEVER is that you kill off your finesse for playing subtler ideas on lighter strings - yes you can play fast on .009's after practicing on 0.13's but it will take you a few days tro acclimate to the lighter guage so you dont clobber it. Albert Lee gets a fat country chicken' pickin' sound and he uses strictly 0.09's. McLaughlin used to use .008's in the Mahavishnu Orchestra days, but Jeff Beck goes the other way and he uses heavy 0.11's and 0.12's on his STRATS. He has incredible strength in his hands and so .009's or .010's probably dont work well for him anymore. If yuo are going to play a rock gig with lots of bending and stuff practice for a few days in a row on a solid body electric with 0.09's or 0.010's dont practice on an acoustic with 0.013s you may think you are buidling strength but you lose all your finesse and you have to re-orient yourself to the lighter guage.

What am I going to do with it? Maybe he's got some value in there
that I may not know about - even though many guys have redundant
information, if you can glean one piece of information that you never
thought about before from it then you succeeded. You can learn things
    from anyone.
