I still see wrist....but it could be the camera angle...

I tried to focus on your forearm....but I didn't see the rotation I was looking for...

    Could be the camera angle???

The ultimate goal is to be able to fly through scales using the Sarod technique. Imagine how fluid that would be!!
Picking 4 per note...ect is all good....good practice....but the ultimate goal is to be able to flutter through the scale runs using Sarod.

    Practice everything...:)

Take it up to 11 picks per note....ect......

My take is it almost the same as the stiff arm technique.....the ability to be fluid with the alt picking is not really there.
Directional picking may be an option for this type of technique......or just carpet bomb the notes....
    but
I have never spent the 2 years practicing the VH style.....but I did spend a couple of years when I was younger with the stiff arm technique.

Looks like your having fun....which is cool...but in technique language...tighten it up and make the movement vibrate.

Try a different camera angle....I have to see your wrist.
The first video I couldn't see...I have to log in and I forgot my password...lol.....Ill get it fixed soon.
It looks like you are getting more and more comfortable.
That jumping effect is what I noticed as well.

NOW.....keep playing across the strings....spend a bit more time getting it down because right now you are at a spot where you are developing that technique...SPEND EXTRA TIME on alt picking across the strings. Coils are a great way to get it down!

    Good for you

    LOL
20 pounds is what I use....5 min one hand...switch ect.....
Don't over do the weights because I did that once and screwed up my wrist.....bad idea....
Just enough weight so you can do 5 min and rotate between hands.
    1/2 hour at most.

Its better to keep everything tucked in....that would be the goal.
As far as a problem.....eeeeee......just something to work on.

    You guys are getting it!
    Goodt!
    Alternate pick across 2 strings.....then 4 strings....then 6.
    Then Alternate pick across Well...1 string lol...then 3...then 5.
The natural feel will be present when you practice this way.....and there is a different "feel" when you do this.
Kinda like playing a 2 note per string pattern vs a 3 note per string pattern using the Sarod Hybrid. Get to know the differences and then after months...blend them together.
You guys have the motion. Now its time to apply it to alt picking across the strings.
Don't forget about "Marker Notes" this will help in the scalpel part of the hybrid. They keep you on track.

    Very goodt..

How about 2 finger ladders....plant the other 2 forming a 2 note chord...just to say...
nOw what if you start moving those 2 ladder fingers aroung a scale???

    ????

    ideas forming????

    :)

    Delta is right....
Once you memorized the 14 patterns...thats it...your done with that scale definition.
In our case I am assuming the Major scale.

These patterns inner link forming sort of a chain link fence. All you have to do is shift them...left or right and you have changed the key!

    Thats really it....

The friking hard part is the CHORDS!!!!!!!

You seem to have the basic idea...exaggerated....but yeah. Keep at it and tighten it up as much as you can and you should be goodt.

    It just takes time.........

  • Scale practice/ learning adviceDateTue Mar 26, 2013 7:39 am

I ran through as many as I could in a practice day....but.....spend at least 20-30 minutes on each. My good daily routine was at least 6 hours.
If you dont have that much time.....I would say concentrate at first with...
    3rds
    4ths
    1234...2345 pattern

These three should be the basics.

Thats if you only have an hour or two to play.

Now if time isnt an issue.....

    first
    Warm up...trills ladders...30 min.

    second
play each scale pattern 10x each...slowly

    third
bump up the time and play them a little faster

    fourth
    start in on the sequences.
    10x each per pattern

Thats how I would solve that problem.

And that would be for just one key....and concentrating on the left hand only.
Picking exercises are not even included...lol.

    But that should work.

Another thing you would want to do is to write out each pattern 10x before you go to bed. Helps with memory.

  • Scale practice/ learning adviceDateMon Mar 25, 2013 2:41 pm

The scale sequences should be practice daily...routinely. These are what give you the tools to play (MECHANICALLY). the "Key" changes are what gives you familiarity with the actual scale definition patterns as well as the great tones(voices) they produce when changing keys.

As far as changing key through a chord progression....if it fits...??
I dont see why the pentatonic would be easier.....I would use a sort of free drop note pentatonic to improv with..???
I dont know the answer to this one besides FRaKhs pattern answer.

    "if it fits....play it!"

I forgret what times it is...hehehe

I try to keep the pick at around ohhh...20-30degrees. Its a good clean tone for me.

On some of the vids the camera show pretty well the angle of attack. Try strolling through all the vids here and I am sure you find the answer through vid. On my video I know I show the angle well.
