ALSO... I do have a problem..... Its the muting aspect with Sarod. When I go to mute the "balance is now disturbed" which prevents me, for the time being, from being able to zip around easily. This is where I am experimenting with SCALPEL for this technique. I am not sure yet whether or not I will be able to play Sarod "with" muting at full speed. I am still in the beginner stage with this and may have to spend years again on it before I will know.
I just never really payed attention to muting until it was brought up by someone in the forum. Then I said to myself...oh shit! I suck at it! lol!
ohh....I say experimenting with Scalpel because my thumb is screwed up....I have to change it for it to work for me. But I have a good feeling this will be the answer for muting....at least for me.
Perfectly stated. When everything is in balance you will know and will be able to get back to it fairly easily when you forget after a break in playing.
My arm...wrist...elbow...ect is free from being locked down. I dont really think about it, I just know when I am in the zone with my right arm/hand position. Its a balance. The main thing you want to have is that rotation of the forearm...thats the whole Sarod technique. Whatever makes you comfortable in completing this task....that is what you are looking for.
Hhhhmmmm.... For me the two hands have never really caught up with each other. One has always been faster...or better than the other. For instance... When I was younger I was able to sweep the patterns. My timing sucked because I didnt know any better than to just imitate an arpeggio type lick with a pentatonic or 3nps pattern. So right there tells you my right hand sucked and my left was faster. Now they are almost in sync. But my left hand is really lagging behind in endurance...mainly because of the lack of practice time I have at the moment. BUT I am working on an idea that will help. I think the theory of it is sound but again I must run the gauntlet with Pebber. When practiced it has worked for me.
Practice the TRILL!
Do it in your own way as far as hardcore...dont get hurt....but I am a devoted student to thee TRILL!
Hint.... when you do the trill pay attention to ALL OF THE LEFT HAND MOVEMENTS.....EVERYTHING! You may stumble on what I discovered. :)
see how I exagerated the movement...that full rotation. thats what you have to get down...that IS the power behind it. Practice each technique separately before you practice them together. Sarod by itself....scalpel by itself.
It will take some time to get them down...maybe even several years for the basic idea.
you have time.....
Give it a month then make another video...unless you have specific questions....then cool.
Well... they are "ah la" Pebber Brown exercises...everything I do comes directly from Pebber....my only teacher.....but expanded to maximize my own rhythm. When you hit high speed with Sarod, 3nps patterns can be started and completed within a couple of seconds. I expanded simple patterns throughout the neck, covering ALL the frets. Sooo...theoretically one could play 3nps patterns(shifting chromatically) through all of the frets within say within one minute. The hard part isnt the right hand...its the left hand! I also came up with some symmetric patterns to really work on hand movement/positioning/ect. I designed these patterns using Geometry. They are designed to get you right hand technique moving through all of the strings as well as the left hand getting up to speed. There is a lot of shifting....sliding...bouncing that I incorporated into them. You really have to work on the trill for endurance because I kid you not, when you get to the 7-8th fret your hand will catch on fire! lol. Hurts like hell! :) Im getting closer to the new thread...my work is killing me right now with time.
I agree with Ursin, it appears you are on the right track. I want to see you exaggerate the Sarod movement...just so I know you understand the concept. If you have it down...it looks really good and tight. One thing I might be seeing is the exaggerated movement of Scalpel and not enough Sarod. Its a balance which is why I want to see you exaggerate the Sarod movement. Let Sarod do the work for you. What you want to see eventually is very little Scalpel movement...more Sarod. Then when you start to hone in on the technique....just a blur....very little Sarod movement...very little Scalpel movement. Take a look at my old video....the Scalpel movement is almost not noticed. That...I absolutely believe...is the way to go. The economy of motion is getting to be on the money with that video and I am working on that today.
Sooo
Think of a balance of motion...little less Scalpel Motion....little more Sarod...lets see what that produces for you.
Use the Modules, they work pretty well. If your just starting try to break everything up evenly until you see whats going on.
Ultimately....
Its technique you want to get down. "if you cant play it...you cant play it"
The Modules will get you there.
Also after a month or two getting the idea of the Modules then we can talk about how to fine tune your time.
Trills are a must. They will strengthen your left hand. Scalpel Picking exercises as well. If I had only two exercises I was given to do I would choose the trill and alternate picking exercises across the strings.
I hope this helps some....
Also take a look at Pebbers videos....he shows how to practice the Modules. Dont forget to download ALLLLLLL the free stuff. keep it in a seperate file on your desktop. Thats what I do. Also start writting out the scale patterns. Man there is a lot there to do...lol.
Nah... They are notes where I consciously pay attention to in order to make sure I am on the right track as far as alternate picking through an exercise. Say...10 notes in I sould have an upstroke (with proper alt picking)...if I dont i screwed up somewhere and need to either slow down or start over and pay attention.
For ease of understanding I created them on every other string as you practice a scale(upstroke...upstroke...upstroke)......kinda see what Im getting at??
When you hit the higher speeds you have to think 8....12....16 notes ahead...right? Otherwise you will get nowhere and you wont be able to push the boundaries. The marker notes just let me know Im flying correctly....thats all. Just notes I concentrate on in order to make sure Im alt picking correctly.
"Flight Patterns" is a whole set of patterns/exercises I arranged just for Sarod. I cant even get half way through one set because they are intense!!!!! You must have the trill down in order for your left hand to take it. Mine falls apart around the ninth fret at jogging speeds....so Im trying to get them down so I can make a descent video. They are basically symmetric scales designed to torture you left hand and develop your Sarod alternate picking across ALL the strings. Hand movement and positioning is a must with these things.
But most importantly... I am trying to develop a whole new technique...:))))))))) or at least incorporate a brilliant one into my own. I need to run it by Master first before I show it. I call it....
