Its fine - be flexible when you play . When you are playing songs you have to move around so dont be rigid. Practice the exericises and scales with the thumb behind the neck, songs wherever feels right.

The Masters are masters because they constantly practice the basics in addition to new repertoire. I was amazed one time at the Dick Grove School of Music back n 1980 when I was in an improv 101 class and who should show up to be in the class none other than Master Saxophonist Ernie Watts (album and studio credits a mile long). WHen I was 18 I practiced every day from 9am to 2pm, then made some lunch ad then at 3pm I startedteaching lessons until 8pm then I went to a nightly band practice until about 11 or 12. Where was a nightoff from band practice I would practice more scales for 2-3 hrs. Some days when I didnt have any privatelessons I would practice 12 hrs or 13 hrs with a couple of light food breaks. You say "CHROMATC ASCENDNG/DESCENDING" however for the past 4 decadesI have seen thousands of guys do it wrong. Why dont you post a video of your practicng so we can see what you are doing whether you are doing it rgt or not.Also - what is an "altered scale?" define that for us and tell us HOW you arepracticing it.

Paul-Quit eating solid food for 30 days and ONLY drink coffee. Then practice Sarod picking 10hrs a day for those 30 days.At the end of 30 days you can go to the store - but only to buy more coffee and bathroom supplies.
