Essential Reading List

Has anyone got an essential reading list for guitar? I've been working through a bunch of sight reading stuff, Mick's the advanced guitarists, Joe pass guitar style and I've picked up a copy of the real book for sight reading practice. Oh and of course, I've got all Pebber's PDFs printed out and either taped to the wall or in my binder.

Anything I'm missing?

Hi Marko, and Welcome to the Forum!

Glad to see that you have armed yourself with Pebber's essential documents!

Deciding which books to purchase usually depends on what you are trying to focus on, as I do not know of one book that covers it all. A good place to start: ADAM KADMON'S GUITAR GRIMOIRE. He's actually an old buddy of Pebber's (although Adam Kadmon is not his real name)

Hey Adam, thanks for the reply. You know I forgot that I even have the grimoire tucked away on the shelf! I've dug it out and put on my desk for easier access. I'd been using the Neck Diagrams application in it's place recently, as it allows me to swap out notes for intervals on the fly which I've found really helpful, only thing is i need to generate the scales I need.

The grimoire has some great explainations thanks.

I'd been looking for a good theory book to read by the pool while vacationing in Spain this week. I've opted for The Jazz Theory book by Mark Levine. I've made a wee start on it (while I should be packing) it seems really interesting and has given me a few lightbulb moments already. Now I better get packing before my wife whacks me over the head with my guitar.

Dam, I'm going to miss having a guitar to hand while we're away. Although a week of sun and theory will be good for me 😊

Hi Marko!

My family, on my Mother's side, comes from Asturias! Enjoy Spain (or I hope you enjoyed it, if you see this after your trip). You know, it's driving me nuts , but Pebber sent me this United States Navy Music Theory book, or something like that,,,and I can't find it for the life of me!

Anyway, here are some of my favorites (in no particular order):

Modern Chord Progressions - Jazz And Classical Voicings For Guitar - Ted Greene

Lenny Breau - Fingerstyle Jazz

Jazz Practice Ideas With Your Real Book - Andy McWain
