  • CAGED system gets trashed by Tom HessDateMon Feb 16, 2015 9:05 pm

I started on the CAGED system back in 2009 but I quickly moved on from it because if it's limitations in terms of learning and understanding the 7diatonic modes...there was some thing missing there.it got me playing some solos fast but after 1year I had to move up and just stay away from it.
I guess as you progress on your guitar playing you will find necessary to move away from the CAGED system.
the 14 position system made me understand modes and improved my playing 100%, today thanks to Pebber and his 14 position system I can go from ionian to dorian to mixolidian, any mode I feel like just by figuring out the 14 position system.
My improvisations are way better now with more flavor, I no long have to linger on the minor pentatonic for all my solos. ..
the problem with sparing guitar players they are looking for easy ways, magic solution. ..
So I would say, if you are asking "should I learn the CAGED sys ?" That means you are a begginer and don't know it yet, so go ahead and lean it. See it for yourself, try it, use it, see what you can do with it after if you wish move on from it but remember learning is never a bad thing...
just stop beeing lazy and go practice...
    or not.

  • 14 position sys in Dmaj .. Cmaj DateSun Oct 20, 2013 11:15 am

I'm working on this stuff for some time now" 2 years".
And I wily like to ask you guys how do approach playing the 14 scale system on Dmajor or C major...
For Dmaj I'm trying to start on the second note of the scale In this case D , therefore creating a Dorian mode sound..and for C the first available note is E open on the guitar that will give me a Phrygian sound ..
How do you go about doing this?
Should I start on the root always ? If so I would start my Dmaj way up on the10th fret and so on ..
I don't know if I made myself clear but share some wisdom on this matter please..
    Back at it!!!

Hi guys I'm back after a while, lots changed in my life and now I'm back in the practice room.
I have a question for you guys.
I am practicing "flying in a blue dream " by satriani and when I get to the tapping part I noticed my finger nails getting in the way of getting a clear sound..
How do you guys do with nails and tapping?
    Cheers .

    Hey dude!!!!
The stratocaster VG is the best option!!!
I just came from the store and played all of them, I think you can get a better jazz tone from using the humbuck combination on the strat VG.. The only thing is, it costs more then the HH strat .. Gotta save some money and buy that...
I love that guitar man.. You can have a kit if tones with that guitar.

I'm going to the music store on Saturday and play both guitars, but as far as I searched the Gibson is way more expensive than the fender HH..
The epiphone, I rented one before the 335 and don't like it at all, didn't stay in tune , I had to take it back the next day..
I was thinking about the telecaster a lot lately, the delux model maybe ?
I know it is good for jazz, rock and blues because it has both humbuck and single coil pick ups.
I have never played a tele before . I wonder if it is lighter than he LP studio ... But probably not as light as the stratocaster ....
    Peace guys!!

Do you think that the 339 Gibson has the same comfort as a strat?
I know it has a great sound, I have heard it before , I think Pebber has on of those as well.

I'm not gonna try solder because I'm not good at it....
I'm debating with myself if I should trade my LP studio for a telecaster just because of comfort ... The LP is heavy but sound great ..
The strat is light and very comfortable but doesn't have the sound in looking for , I had a strat before USA made and I traded for this obe I have now... I like strats , the way they feel ... But I love the Gibson tone...
I think the tele is a crossover between the both..
    Am I wrong?

the way I see it is: the more time you put in practice the better you get , the easier it gets to play a song or technique.
the real challenge is find time and the will to practice...
if you love playing guitar you will find the time and the will, and you will get better...
you might not be among the best players in the world, but you will earn respect from friends, from your band and from the big cats..
I dont know man, i play guitar because I love it , i love the way it sounds , I love the expressions you can get out of it... one single bend note has a lot of meaning and feeling....I had my reality check already, I know I wont be teh best player but I practice to get better and I will be the best that I can be , thats for sure..

I like those tunes as well, I can play one note samba and the girl from ipanema by heart...
I like summertime , wave, meditation , fly me to the moon...
There are too many to list here...
The fake book is a real good idea.
There is an application on the AppStore I think it is called Realbook , it has thousands of tunes and all tunes have a backing track , very cool app I think it cost 12$ ...
Check it out, it is better than having paper.. I think.
