In the past 35 years, EVERY SINGLE PERSON I have ever worked with had a different set of jazz standards that they though were the ones to learn. I am in 2 jazz bands right now and the tunes are drastically different from each other. Everyone thinks they "know" what the top 100 jazz tunes are but everyone says something different. When they start arguing about it I just fuckin turn it up loud and play some fuckin HENDRIX! That will show them!

I agree with you Pebber.... This question gets asked in all jazz forums and people always have different lists, you are the first honest strait foward guy...
I like you because you say it like it is, no BS...
I hate the type of people who try to elaborate a complex answer and try to make you look stupid...
Pebber where do you play??
Any link on jam sections, jazz stuff?
Do you use flat wounded strings?
Do you use your strat to play jazz?

Sorry about not explaining anything about that. It's a segment of an interview with musicians Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg at the Calcutta School of Music. In this segment the question of "what is jazz" is discussed. It's pretty abstract but I think is pertinent to the topic.

Based on the very little jazz I know and the jazz guys I know I have to agree w/ Pebber. Every jazz guy has 10 different tunes he would put up there. So you might as well grab a Real Book, open up to a random page, and learn that tune. Do it 10 times and you've got your own 10 tunes.

However, since you're asking for specific tunes, here are a few I enjoy...

How High The Moon
Girl from Ipanema
One Note Samba
Blue Bossa

I like those tunes as well, I can play one note samba and the girl from ipanema by heart...
I like summertime , wave, meditation , fly me to the moon...
There are too many to list here...
The fake book is a real good idea.
There is an application on the AppStore I think it is called Realbook , it has thousands of tunes and all tunes have a backing track , very cool app I think it cost 12$ ...
Check it out, it is better than having paper.. I think.

-condoriano-
There you see - in the past 35 years I have NEVER been asked to play ANY of those tunes on a Jazz gig.
I recognize about 3 of them and the rest of them I have NEVER even heard of.
Where are you getting this bizarre list from anyway did you just make it up yourself?

Yes that is a video game but I meant to be referring to the soundtrack. These are just songs that I personally consider to be standards of jazz. I didn't mean that they should be anyone elses standards.

A "STANDARD" means that its STANDARD material that LOTS of Jazz players play all the time. Obscure tunes like the legend of ZELDA are not STANDARD tunes. If you want STANDARDS you want COMMONLY PLAYED and COMMONLY KNOWN tunes that have been played by a LOT of Jazz Musicians for many many years. There are quite a few but ZELDA is by no means any kind of STANDARD tune. Your concept of "oh they just indicate jazz to ME" is a randomly spewed out comment based on a lack of knowledge or depth. Why dont we just get a SWING drummer and play chromatic bass lines then? Thats what people do anyway who have no idea what they are doing or talking about. That would indicate jazz as well wouldnt it?
