  • Question about picking exercisesDateFri Sep 06, 2019 6:44 pm

Keep in mind there is no right or wrong, just what works for you.

Sometimes I literally put my left hand in my pocket when doing picking exercises because I am trying to focus all my attention to what my right hand is doing. Other times, I hold 6 string barre chords to develop my grip and left thumb strength but there are other exercises I use for doing that sort of thing. Personally, I prefer the E major chord...it just sounds awesome on the guitar.

After a while, you NEED to change chords with your picking exercises because the changing string tension will throw your right hand into uncharted waters and it sounds WAY more musical.

When I clicked the first hybrid picking video, I IMMEDIATELY noticed the the chord you are using. I spent about 2 hours today doing my hybrid picking and that's the same chord I use!!!

Stick with it man, you are doing well!!

Topic by Brian. Forum: PB Guitarstudio FORUMS

I've been playing for about 2.5 years or so, and have been taking video lesson from PB for the past 18 months. I asked the Maestro for an evaluation of my playing and decided to post the links for everyone to comment/criticize/blast/destroy or anything else you want to add. I suck at making videos (don't really give a hoot to learn how either) so there are 9 short vids with a vocal description at the beginning of each.

Edit: Forum states I cannot have any links in the post.....any ideas??

There is a 45 minute video is on Youtube called, "Basic Barr Chords 1A and the PDF is on the free guitar lessons section.

Hope that helps. Not saying this is the paid lesson you are looking for, but offers plenty of info to get you started.

  • Student Level Access general progression questionDateTue Nov 20, 2018 10:59 am

I familiarized myself with the free material about 6 months before I began paying for lessons. I started off with 2 videos per month and now do 4 videos per month.

All I can say, is that it completely depends upon how much you practice. I am able to do 4 or even 6 hours per day, so I am still ahead of the video lessons I receive. This doesn't mean I don't get value from the videos; there is almost always something in the video that I never thought of doing. I am really good at doing 5 and 7 notes per beat while doing scales but when I try 5 notes per beat doing 4 note chromatic patterns, I am tripping over my own fingers. Then there is the matrix of timing ratios. When I think I am good at that, I practice doing X patterns at alternate timings and realize just how bad I suck.

It's gonna take years to get good, so you may as well embrace your suck. No doubt getting more lessons will give you more to practice, but if you are all about "Show me this, now show me this" without putting in the time, you will just have a bunch of videos.
