    I found a couple of videos on Sarod and thought would be cool to share on here. The name "Sarod Picking" probably came from this instrument called Sarod.

    Hello guys,
    I haven't been on here or a while. I see many new members here. Welcome to all!!

    I have been practicing 1.5-2 hours a day lately. My picking speed has gone way faster after I started lessons with Pebber. However, I still struggle with Improvising or playing over a backing track probably because I do not practice playing over a backing track lol. Well, its time to practice and progress.. Here is a video of me improvising over a C Major Rock backing track from Pbguitarstudio.com. I know it does not sound great, lots of mistakes, not clean etc. However this is on the spot improvisation. None of the licks/melodies were pre thought. Any feedback/advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Okay, so am sitting down with a pen and paper and listening to songs and trying to figure out the chords, melody, scale and tonal center with my ears. I just finished my first song and I am little bit confused about how I should look at and think of the chords as I play them and what the tonal center for this song is.

    I figured out that it is played in F# Dorian mode which is also the (ii)minor in the E Major scale. Now, should I think of the tonal center as F# Dorian? or E Major?
    Above I have written the roman numerals for every chord. Should I think of the F#m chord as (ii)m instead of (i)m, D#dim as (vii)dim instead of (vi)dim and so on and think of the tonal center as E Major?

    OR I can choose to think of it either way I want? Which one is the general approach? How would you think of it if you were analyzing this song?

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!!

    Yeah, I appreciate your reply Nick. No, the muting hand actually didn't make a bad noise.

    I learned isolating one hand idea from Tom Hess, especially for directional/economy picking technique. I guess I can apply the same idea for trilling as well.

    The guitar is shaking a little bit, but I don't think that is the reason for my picking hand shaking. Isn't it normal for the guitar to shake a little bit while trilling?

    Yes that could be correct. I watched the video a few times and at times I am subconsciously doing scalpel picking, other times my whole hand is moving. You can see my thumb and index finger only move at 1:15. I think that I am subconsciously picking in the air.

    Okay so I have been doing theses trill exercises everyday since I read this post about a week ago. I've been doing 2 minutes for each finger on each string, total of 48 minutes. I can feel my finger curvature and strength has become nice and strong, especially my pinky, but my picking hand shakes when I am trilling. It looks as if I am picking the string but i am not. My hand is shaking very bad. I am muting other strings with my picking hand/fingers.
    My hand starts shaking at around 0:56 here.

    What should I do to fix this Ursin?

    Thank you Ursin and Damon. There is no doubt that Pebber is a great teacher. Yeah, I am going to have to learn to see individual notes inside the scale shape.

    Damon, you should try looking at Musicians Wanted on Craigslist. I responded to a few ad on there and met some cool people. I also tried putting my own ad but that didn't work good for me. I talked to some of my close friends and asked them if they have a friend who is interested in playing certain instrument. That's how I started this group.

    I realized that playing in a group is not that easy for me. I can play a complete song at home over a backing track making a little amount of mistake but I find it very hard to play the same thing in the group. Is that a common problem or just me?

    Hey all
    I've been busy and haven't been here in a while. I started playing with my buddies some weeks ago. We practice once a week on weekends and I should say its going pretty good. Lots of mistakes but we are all beginners. It really makes so much sense now when I am playing a solo. I think 14 position system is paying off now, I can visually see a shape in the fretboard when I am soloing over something. In the past, I used to play note to note and hit wrong notes sometimes because I couldn't visualize or didn't know how to visualize the scale shape.

    What do you guys think of when you play in song that you have already learned. Do you just play from your memory or you still try to visualize a chord/scale shape?

    Cliff- I guess I forgot to send you one last time. I just sent you one some minutes ago.

    I have a little improvement in counting 9 and 10 notes per beat now inside my head. Little bit improvement in picking too but not perfect yet. Tempo same as last time. Some improvement in picking, and I changed my pick from JazzIII XL Series to Dava

    I am sorry for the confusion. I don't mean that you have a bad left hand technique. I mean that you can play way better if you correct your left hand posture. I have sent you a private message on here. Please respond to that. I guess it would't be nice to flood this thread by two people talking back and forth haha.

    Very nice Damon. I like that fast picking and clean tone.

    Cliff, nice glasses haha. I find it difficult to change the strings while picking fast too. I think I should put a small suggestion on your fretting hand. Your fretting hand looks very weak in the video, your fingers don't look nice, tight and curved. I have noticed that Damon has his almost parallel to the frets and Scott too. I always try to keep my fretting fingers curved and pointing towards me or at least parallel to the frets. Your fingers are almost pointing away from you. Thanx to Ursin for helping me correct my fretting hand.


    My last weeks video was at 56 and this time I tried at 59. Well, this is actually a fail video instead of a progress video I guess haha. I couldn't practice much, probably about 2 hours. Anyways, I tried and I still can't concentrate on 10 notes per beat. I guess I should slow down haha.

    I don't know if something is wrong with my computer or youtube. I hear the audio don't see the video.
