  • Scales that dont start at the tonicDateMon Aug 11, 2014 12:06 pm

For practicing purpose I'd say just play it from the lowest note on the 6th string.. but keep in mind it's not the root.
And as soon as you got a shape down, I'd suggest to double / tripple etc the notes and also play the shape in intervals. Then be creative/musical.
Just playing a scale up and down is just the place to start in my opinion.

You play the Cmin scale as long as you are playing the notes within the scale. It does not matter on what note a certain pattern starts. Im my opinion a pattern or position is just an overview of all the notes in a certain scale within a restricted area of the fretboard.
When you play a melody or a solo, you don't always start with the first note of the positions anyway. So it just tells you what notes you could choose in that given key.
But always be aware of what note has which function in that scale you are playing (root, 2nd etc).

Ok, then I'll post it here.. I think the https part screwed me over.
Just a very short overview of some trills, ladders and spiders. Of course I do the excercises in more variations and much longer usually.

Thank you in advance for your feedback and sorry for the, hopefully acceptable, quality.

Should everybody be posting vids in this thread or am I supposed to open a new one?
Anyway.. I'm not able to post any links. I get the message "Your posts contains to many links. A maximum of 0 links is allowed."

    Why does this occur?

I think you can upload a video to youtube and just embed it in your post. There's a button for this when you write/edit a post.

I've found tons of great advice in "The Advancing Guitarist" by Mick Goodrick..
It's got some very good and thorough approaches imho.

Yes, I already did them in the past but decided to go back to one finger trills, so I could do 15min for each finger.
I tend to go back to previous patterns a lot, because I think I suck with those basic patterns too much to proceed.. ;-)
Do you think I should start adding scale patterns to my daily routine?

  • Legato threadDateSat Oct 05, 2013 8:28 am

    Hi folks,
I usually do one hour of trills every day. I aim for 15min each finger combination and currenty I'm doing 0-1 to 0-4.
Since there are so many combinations I wonder if I should go on to another fingerset, do more different trills with less time for each, mix in 2-3-4 finger patterns, go to scale patterns or whatnot.
    What would you recommend?

    Thank you in advance!

  • Transcribing vs learning from sheet musicDateMon Feb 13, 2012 6:35 am

    Hi folks,
I am currently into transcribing and started to transcribe some easier songs. But if I want to approach a more difficult song, I wonder if you think that learning it from sheets its more rewarding than trying to transcribe the piece?
It's very hard sometimes because of all the instruments playing together and all the effects etc.. even if I could manage to transcribe a part of it eventually, it would have a lot of mistakes and would take a lot of time...
Maybe it's a better idea first to learn a couple of "harder" songs from music sheets and then start to transcribe similar music? I mean, when you transcribe a lot of songs of a certain band and you learned some of their songs from music sheets, you may identify a lot a chords/voicings/etc they tend to use regulary..

What's you opinion? Thanks in advance!

  • How to approach a practice sessionDateThu Sep 22, 2011 12:50 am

Thanks again, I think I'll manage to figure out the fingerings for the other patterns on my own.
And one more question: Do you recommend using the rolling technique or finger every note separately? Probably practice both? I've heard quite a few different statements.
I really appreciate all the answers!

Ok I see.. Thats what i actually did most of the time.

And one more question: Are there suggested fingerings for the scale sequence patterns such as fourths and fifths? Or do you recommend to figure them out on your own?
    Thanks..

  • How to approach a practice sessionDateTue Aug 09, 2011 9:03 am

    Hi folks,
I''ve studien Pebbers daily practice routine and i wonder how am I supposed to approach it? Sonce there are a lot of excercises in each module, is it more efficient to practice a lot of different excercises each day for, let's say 10min each or should I only pick one or two of them and practice them for a longer period?

    Thanks in advance!

  • How to learn scales in every key effectivelyDateSun Oct 24, 2010 12:06 pm

    Hi,
I wonder what you think is the most effective way to learn playing a scale in all keys? I usually play around the circle of 4th/5th and either play every scale in a certain position, according to the 14 position system or try to play all scales in a small area on the fretboard, e.g. from the 5th to the 8th fret.

What do you think is an effictive way to practice playing in all keys?

In addition: Nice jam tracks belonging to the circle of 4th/5th are highly appreciated!
